How to Make Mini Vegan Chicago Hot Dog Bites

1. Preheat Oven and Prep Puff Pastry:

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). On a floured surface, roll out the puff pastry and cut into 12 equal squares. Place each square into a cupcake tin slot to create little cups.

2. Season and Add Hot Dogs:

Lightly spray each puff pastry square with olive oil and sprinkle with poppy seeds and celery salt. Place a slice of vegan hot dog into each square and bake for 20-30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and crisp.

3. Make the Topping:

While the bites are baking, combine the minced onion, tomato, pickles, peppers, and relish in a bowl. Taste and adjust with salt and pepper if needed.

4. Assemble, Garnish, and Enjoy!

Once the hot dog bites have cooled slightly, top each one with a generous spoonful of the onion and tomato mixture. Drizzle with mustard and add sauerkraut if desired. Enjoy!

Tips and FAQs

  • Choose the Right Vegan Hot Dogs: Pick a brand that holds up well when baked for the best texture and taste.
  • Customize the Heat: Use diced sport peppers for a spicy kick, or substitute with mild pepperoncinis if you prefer a milder flavor.
  • Prep Ahead: You can assemble the toppings ahead of time to make serving quick and easy.
  • Thaw the Puff Pastry Properly: Make sure to thaw the puff pastry in the refrigerator to keep it cold but pliable. This helps it bake up flaky and crisp.

Can I make these mini Chicago Hot Dog Bites ahead of time?

Yes! You can bake the pastry and vegan hot dog portion ahead, then add the toppings right before serving.

What if I can’t find sport peppers?

You can easily swap in pepperoncinis or even pickled jalapeños for a similar tangy taste.

Can I use a different pastry instead of puff pastry?

Yes, you can use crescent roll dough or even biscuit dough if puff pastry isn’t available. Just keep in mind it may alter the texture slightly.

What are some good vegan hot dog brands for this recipe?

Popular options include Field Roast, Beyond Sausage, or Lightlife. Choose one that you enjoy as the flavor will stand out in each bite!
