Grab a drink and let’s get to making the best Cheeseburger Tater Tot Bites!
how to make vegan cheeseburger tater tot bites
I wish I could say that I came up with this genius idea of an appetizer, but I’ve seen it circling the internet for awhile now. I believe I first saw a recipe for cheeseburger tater tot bites on Tasty … thing is, I have yet to see a vegan version. So here I am, providing you all with a vegan version, complete with special sauce!
Anyway, my vegan Cheeseburger Tater Tot Bites are super easy to prepare. Here’s how:
- Make the Signature Sauce. Listen to me when I say your Vegan Cheeseburger Tater Tot Bites NEED this sauce. You can omit any of the toppings you don’t like, but this sauce takes these bites to a whole new level that you absolutely want to advance to! To make it, just mix all the ingredients together and set aside until you’re ready to serve. That’s it, my friends.
- Par-Bake Your Tots & Form Them Into “Cups”. Partially baking your tots makes them easier to form into cups. I don’t suggest thawing them, as most frozen tater tots suggest baking straight from frozen. Once they’ve been in the oven, use a pestle, tamper or a spoon to form the tots together and form a “cup”.
- Make Your Filling. While your tater tots are par baking, cook you vegan beef crumbles, season, and mix in your vegan cheddar cheese. Fill your tater tot cups with about 1-2 tablespoons of the “meat” filling, and finish baking for 15-20 minutes!
- Add Your Burger Toppings. Once your Vegan Cheeseburger Tater Tot Bites are done baking, add all your traditional burger toppings : special sauce, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and onion!
That’s it! Easy peasy, right?
can i make these vegan cheeseburger tater tot bites ahead of time?
Yes, you can! To make my Vegan Cheeseburger Tater Tot Bites ahead of time, simply make them up to the step that you stuff the cups with the burger filling. Let them cool, cover tightly with tin foil, and refrigerate. When you’re ready to bake them, remove the foil and bake them at 425 degrees for 15 – 20 minutes! They should keep well in the refrigerator for up to two days ahead.

XOXO!
- ¼ cup vegan mayonnaise
- 2 TBS ketchup
- 1 TBS sweet pickle relish
- 1½ tsp dill pickle juice
- 1 tsp white vinegar
- ¼ tsp salt and pepper
- 1 bag frozen tater tots
- 1 TBS avocado oil
- ½ LB (8 oz) vegan beef crumbles
- ½ tsp each - paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper
- ½ cup vegan cheddar cheese shreds
- Finely shredded lettuce, for serving
- Dill pickles, for serving
- Finely diced tomatoes, for serving
- Minced onion, for serving
- Preheat oven to 425 degrees
- In small bowl, whisk all the ingredients together. Set aside.
- Grease a cupcake pan and place 5 tater tots in each cup. Bake for 10 minutes.
- While the tater tots are in the oven, prepare your burger filling. In a large pan on medium heat, add your oil. Once the oil is hot, add your vegan beef crumbles and season with paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Cook, mixing occasionally, until warmed through, 4 to 5 minutes. Reduce the heat to low, add the vegan cheese shreds, and continue to stir until the residual heat melts most of the cheese, another 4 to 5 minutes.
- After 10 minutes in the oven, remove cupcake pan, but leave the oven on. Using a pestle, tamper or the back of a spoon, press the tater tots down in the center, forming a tater tot "cup".
- Fill each tater to cup with 1 heaping tablespoon of burger and cheese filling. Bake for an additional 20 minutes.
- Remove cupcake pan from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes. Carefully remove each "burger cup" and garnish with burger sauce, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and onions.
- ENJOY!
This was so tasty. I am so grateful for all your wonderful recipes. Everything I’ve made has turned out wonderfully. Thank you!!
Love love this game day recipe. So tasty.
So happy you love it, Suzanne! It’s one of my favorite recipes on the entire blog!
Coming back again to to say how much my family loves these! So easy and delicious on a hot summer day!
So, we couldn’t find regular tater-tots at Sprouts (seriously weird) so we decided to make cheeseburger pizza using the same ingredients. Soooo good! We’ve made it several times and my non-vegan bf keeps talking about how good it was. ???? Thank you for being so darn creative!
I made these tonight. It was very tasty. The sauce reminded me of Big Mac sauce. I will definitely cook again. Maybe adding some cayenne pepper for a kick!
Thanks.
Thank you!!! I’m happy you enjoyed the recipe! Love the idea of a little spice 🙂
To preface, Im not a huge fan of tater tots. I find them blah and greasy. But this was a great way to spruce them up. These were really fantastic!! Me and my 16 year old really enjoyed them very much. They are filled with flavor even without the sauce but the sauce ..omg! We will be making these often.
Made these for the super bowl and they were so good! Bought some kale tots to try out with it as well and they worked great. Ran out of room in my regular muffin tin and made some in the mini muffin tin which turned out to be great one-bite versions of the recipe.
Best part is I was able to make these without destroying the kitchen – keeping this recipe on hand for sure.
These were SO SO good! Everyone kept going back for more. This recipe is a definite keeper. Thank you!!
Thank you, RuthAnn!
